Leadership is a gift, in some ways. It’s also a skill that some can learn, given enough time. Perhaps one of the key factors in successful leadership is the ability to work with others closely while still maintaining enough mental and emotional distance to be able to truly lead. This means being able to motivate and guide without “becoming one of the workers” in some ways. Whether the setting is a for-profit business, a non-profit charity organization or a government council, leadership is necessary and essential.

Everyone would like to live in perfect world that makes everyone equal. In some ways, the best of all possible worlds is like this. Each individual should have the opportunity to be heard, to have influence and to be treated fairly. But without leaders who can make difficult decisions and delegate authority many projects would disintegrate into chaos. At best, the programs that move forward without effective leadership would move slowly and would probably not reach the stated goals. Leaders have to be strong mentally and emotionally. In some cases they must be strong physically. But this does not mean that a strong leader must be cruel, rude or unfeeling. Finding the correct balance of all these characteristics defines a great leader.
